The iPhone doesn't have satellite technology, but the Find my Phone app can track an iPhone that's been lost, stolen, or dropped from an airplane.

Apple's Find My app can even provide GPS location or current cellular position if the phone is still getting one of those signals. Ground crews were also amazed by the accuracy of the reported locations.

This isn't the first time an iPhone has fallen in a rough landing. It was reported that the iPhone X fell over 11.000 feet and survived in August 2021, according to a Diamond Aviators forum post. When dropped in a rural area, it falls near a cell tower, which is very important to be able to find it again.
