Intel Will Release New Chips That Can Run AI Chatbots Without Clouds

JAKARTA - Intel, a US chip technology company, has announced that it will release a new laptop chip that has the ability to run artificial intelligence-based chatbots (AI). In fact, this can be done without having to connect to a cloud data center.

This capability is expected to make businesses and consumers able to test ChatGPT-like technology without having to send sensitive data outside their own computers. Intel will introduce this feature on the "Meteur Lake" laptop chip which will launch in December 2023, supported by new software that will also be released by the company.

Intel also plans to announce a successor named "arrow Lake" next year, which is expected to compete with the best production technology from other chip manufacturing companies such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC). With this move, Intel seeks to seize market share in the development of AI chips outside the cloud data center.

Using a new software called OpenVINO, Intel allows developers to run a big language model, which is the technology behind products like Meta Platforms' ChatGPT, on their laptops. This will result in a faster chatbot response and ensure data remains on the user's device, in order to improve privacy.

Total Katti, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Network Group and Edge Intel, said that with this approach, users can get better performance, lower costs, and more personal artificial intelligence. This approach can also attract businesses that are concerned about providing sensitive data to third-party AI companies.

"AI is still in a technology class where you need a doctorate to use it," Dan Hutcheson, an analyst to TechInsights. "Gelzinger's challenge, CEO of Intel, is to democratize it. If he manages and makes it usable by anyone, it will create a much larger market for the chips he manufactures."

This announcement marks Intel's efforts to compete in the fast-growing AI chip market outside the cloud data center. Intel will continue to strive to make artificial intelligence technology more accessible and used by various groups.
