ChatGPT Becomes Controversy, CEO Of Coursera Believes This Tool Is Instead Useful For Learning

JAKARTA - ChatGPT is becoming a public conversation because it is claimed to be misleading to the world of education, in particular. However, Coursera said this technology is very useful for learning, behind its worldwide controversy.

The CEO of Coursera Jeff Maggioncalda stated that currently many technology companies are competing to present Big Language Models (LLM), ranging from Google, Amazon, and Apple.

According to him, OpenAI's GPT-4 version of ChatGPT is quite reliable in computer programming language compared to verbal. Therefore, Maggioncalda decided to integrate the model into Coursera Vouch.

"So when we build Coursera Vouch, what we decided is, we want to have something to help individual students. We also want to base answers on course content," said Maggioncalda during the announcement of the GPT-4 integration to Coursera to VOI, in Central Jakarta, Wednesday, August 16.

It is known, Coursera Vouch is a generative AI-based virtual learning assistant who provides personalized feedback, answers questions, and summarizes lecture videos and resources.

However, despite its impressive capabilities, the fact is that ChatGPT is highly unpredictable and difficult to tame, by producing misinformation or being described as absurd.

This phenomenon is referred to as an AI hallucinations, and OpenAI has finally announced they are doing something to overcome it by adding process surveillance.

The new strategy could lead to an AI that can be explained better, as it follows a human-like chain of thought, as quoted by the Indian Express.

OpenAI said, reducing hallucinations is an important step to create AGI, or intelligence capable of understanding the world as well as humans.

"So about hallucinations, I've never seen it, that's not true, (especially) I've never seen Coursera Vouch hallucinating, especially in courses," said Maggioncalda.

"But sometimes I've seen it hallucidating, like if you're asking for a URL, web address, sometimes it's just making it up. So we try to catch it and say, don't make up URLs," he continued.

Maggioncalda explained that currently more and more people rely on LLM for language skills, not knowledge.

"And I think what will happen is that more people, they will use LLM for language skills, but not necessarily for knowledge," explained Maggioncalda.

"So I think LLM is a very good language and sometimes you have to give it more knowledge. And the knowledge we give to the Coursera Coach is knowledge from courses. That's why we feel pretty good because it's based on course expertise."
