Google Turning Away From Samsung, Choose TSMC To Make Its Pixel Phone Chip

JAKARTA - Google is reportedly working to replace Samsung with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) for the development of its Tensor G5 chip.

The company previously planned to introduce the first fully customized chip or semi-custom chip design for Pixel smartphones by 2024.

However, the chip with the codename Redondo faces delays and feature changes from Samsung's design, which led Google to make the decision to give it to TSMC earlier this year.

Instead, Redondo will be used as a test chip for the next generation. Now, Google is preparing another new System on Chip (SoC) dubbed Laguna, and launch will take place in 2025.

The Lagoon, labeled as the G5 Tensor, will be produced using TSMC's advanced 3 nanometer (nm) process and carry Fan-Out Integrated technology, which can produce thinner dimensions and increase power efficiency.

TSMC is known as the world's largest contract chip maker to serve big tech companies like Apple and Nvidia.

By developing a special chip, Google can integrate its software and hardware more effectively, potentially opening up new capabilities and efficiency on its devices.

The move is in line with many technology companies trying to reduce dependence on chip suppliers, as quoted by Fone Arena, Friday, July 7.
