Hong Kong Open 2023: Anthony Ginting, Putri KW, And Gregoria Qualify For Round Of 16

JAKARTA Three Indonesian singles have confirmed their way to the round of 16 of the Hong Kong Open 2023. One of them is Anthony Sinisuka Ginting.

Anthony qualified after defeating Canadian representative Brian Yang. The owner of the bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and the second seed won two straight games 21-9 and 21-14 at Hong Kong Coliseum, Wednesday, September 13, 2023.

In the second round, Anthony will face Malaysia's representative Leong Jun Hao. This became the first clash between the two badminton players.

"Tomorrow against Leong Jun Hao. We have never met before. There will be a strategic battle but the main thing is to focus on preparing yourself first," said Anthony after the match.

"Later there will also be an evaluation with the coach about today's match and what kind of tomorrow. Hopefully tomorrow we can give our best," he added.

Meanwhile, from the women's singles number, the journey of two Indonesian representatives who took part in this event was still safe. Both of them compactly qualified for the second round.

One of the tickets from that number was obtained by Putri Kusuma Wardani. He defeated the Japanese representatives, Nozomi Okuhara, two straight games 21-7 and 23-21.

Putri will next be subjected to a tough test in the second half. The reason is, he will face sixth seed from China Han Yue, who sent Saena Kawakami home.

Another ticket in the women's singles was pocketed by Gregoria Mariska Tunjung. The fifth seed passed after stopping Thailand's representatives Busanan Ongbamrungphan with three games 21-17, 18-21, and 21-17.

"I'm sure I'm happy with today's victory because you could say with my current condition, I have to be able to maintain my performance even with a little disorder," he said after the match.
