European Motorcycle Market Strengthens, Italy Leads Growth

JAKARTA - The latest report from the European Motorcycle Manufacturers Association (ACEM) said that from January to September 2023, a total of 873,985 new motorcycles were registered on the main European continent market.

In comparison, in 2022 which is also a positive year for European market growth, there are 781,839 new motorcycle registrations from January to September.

In 2023, the figure grew by 11.8 percent, with a total of 873,985 new motorcycle registrations in the same period.

In the report, Italy is the strongest market for motorcycles, with the largest growth reaching 19.4 percent, recorded 271,552 new two-wheeled motorcycles.

Spain is in second place with 154,019, an increase of 13.4 percent. Germany took third place with a growth of 9.6 percent thanks to 190,490 new registrations. France is in fourth place with an increase of 8.7 percent and a record 168,118 units. Meanwhile, England is stable with 89,806 registrations, showing a decline of 0.4 percent.

Well, unfortunately, this growth strengthening does not apply to automatic motorcycles. Although the motorcycle segment experienced an increase in sales, from January to September 2023, there were only 155,098 registered automatic motorcycles, or a 25 percent decrease compared to 206,927 units last year.

It should be noted that ACEM reports only include France, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Belgium, and Spain. The classification of automatic motorcycles varies in various regions, generally considered L1eB and L2e for two and three wheels.

"European market strong growth in the first nine months showed consumers' ongoing interest in powered motorcycles, both for daily and recreational commuters. Initial figures for October confirmed a positive trend for motorcycles, with the volume of partially automatic motorcycles recovering," ACEM Secretary General Antonio Perlot said., reported by Rideapart, Wednesday, November 22.

It is only recently ended that the 2023 EICMA exhibition is also considered to be driving sales growth until the end of the year considering that there are many new models, both electricity and internal combustion for the 2024 model.

ACEM members include 18 manufacturers such as BMW, Ducati, KTM, MV Agusta, Piaggio, and Triumph, as well as four major Japanese manufacturers.

It should be noted that new players - especially from China - are not represented in this report, so sales figures are likely much higher than the 873,985 new registrations previously mentioned.
