TANGERANG - Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs (Menkopolhukam) Mahfud MD responded to the appointment of the head of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Firli Bahuri as a suspect by the Polda Metro Jaya in the alleged extortion case against former agricultural minister Syahrul Yasin Limpo (SYL).

According to him, the legal process should be applied to the case.

"That's what the legal process should be," Mahfud MD told reporters at Muhammadiyah University Jakarta, Ciputat, South Tangerang, Thursday, November 23.

On Wednesday, November 22, Polda Metro Jaya announced the determination of the status of a suspect for Firli Bahuri regarding the alleged extortion case against SYL. Jokowi's response reflects a respect for the legal principles and the ongoing judicial process.

"Determining Mr. FB as the chairman of the KPK as a suspect," said Ditreskrimsus Polda Metro Jaya Kombes Pol Ade Safri Simanjuntak to reporters, Wednesday night.

Polda Metro Jaya made this decision after assessing that there was sufficient evidence related to alleged corruption, including extortion, receiving gratuities, or receiving gifts by civil servants or state officials related to their positions. This case is related to the handling of legal issues at the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture in the 2020-2023 period.

Firli was charged with Article 12e or Article 12B or Article 11 of Law 31/1999 which was amended by Law 20/2001 concerning Amendments to Law 31/1999 concerning Eradication of Corruption in conjunction with Article 65 of the Criminal Code. Firli faces the most severe sentence of life imprisonment.
