Earthquake M 6.1 Timor Island, Guncangannya Feels Strong Residents In Kupang

KUPANG - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said an earthquake measuring magnitude 6.1 rocked Timor Island, Nusa Tenggara Timor (NTT).

"This earthquake has no potential for a tsunami," said Head of BMKG Kupang Margiono as quoted by ANTARA, Thursday, August 31.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located at coordinates 9.69 South Latitude (LS) and 124.10 East Longitude (BT) or precisely located in the sea at a distance of 36 km northwest of South Central Timor Regency with a depth of 75 km.

An earthquake was felt by residents of Kupang City, Kupang Regency, North Central Timor Regency, Belu, and Malacca Regency.

"The earthquake shock was so strong that the glasses on the plate racks were all rocking," said Desi, a resident of Naikoten II Village, Kupang City.

A number of residents in Kupang City had run out of their homes because the tremors felt strong.

There have been no reports of any damage that occurred in the Timor Island area as a result of the 6.1 magnitude earthquake that rocked the entire island of Timor.
