The European Union Will Never Recognize The Government Of The Niger Military Coup

JENEWA - The European Union will not recognize the government that took power in the coup in Niger this week, said EU Head of Foreign Policy Josep Borrell. Borrell reminded that President-elect Mohamed Bazoum remains the only legitimate president of Niger. "He must be released unconditionally and without any delays," Borrell said, quoted by ANTARA, Sunday, July 30. Borrell warned that the freezing of the constitution and the dissolution of democratic institutions in Niger would weaken the country and its people. "Euni Europe reiterated its firm call that constitutional order must be fully, thoroughly, and without any delays," Borrell continued.The European Union is also ready to support the decisions of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), its partners in Africa, international partner damns, in the matter of Niger. "In addition to the immediate termination of budget support, all cooperation measures in the security sector are suspended indefinitely and will be effective immediately," said Borrell..... This week, a group of Niger soldiers calling themselves the National Council for the Protection of the State announced a coup via television, shortly after detaining Bazoum at his residence.

They argue that the security situation is deteriorating and the government is bad. Bazoum was elected in 2021 in Niger's first democratic transition to power since gaining independence from France in 1960.
