Jakarta's Air Quality Is Called Not Only Due To Motorized Vehicles, But Also The Burning Of Residents' Waste

JAKARTA - The air quality of DKI Jakarta is reportedly producing bad air or in an unhealthy category, the cause is not only due to the large number of motorized vehicles passing by on the streets of the capital city.

From the notes of the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo) in 2022, motorized vehicles from the four-wheel segment were sold to break through 1 million units, an increase of 18 percent compared to the previous year.

It was noted that sales from factories to dealers (wholes) during the period from January to December 2022 reached 1,048,040 units.

"motorized vehicles are only one of the pollution producers of around 30-40 percent. Then, there are more than a hundred industries within a radius of 100 km from Jakarta, there are about 10 coal PLTUs that contribute about 20-30 percent," said automotive expert from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), Yannes Martinus Pasaribu, as reported by ANTARA, Tuesday, June 6.

In addition, the cause of bad air quality is produced from residents who often burn their trash in their own yard. Thus, the smoke produces unhealthy air.

"The rest of the burning of garbage by many residents from the 100 km radius area from Jakarta is reinforced by changes in air patterns which makes the stagnation of air movements accumulated in Jakarta and the absence of rain and humidity," he said.

Even so, the cause of bad and unhealthy air in DKI Jakarta, according to him, is still needed in-depth research. This, not only happened for now.

This incident is not only currently produced by DKI Jakarta. Previously, DKI Jakarta also had an unhealthy air quality predicate.

On Tuesday (6/6), the air quality index in Jakarta was at 120 with a PM 2.5 pollutant and the concentration value was at 43.1 erg/m3 (micrograms per cubic meter).

With that number, Jakarta is in fifth position in the world with bad air producers.
