JAKARTA - At least 10 people were killed and more than 40 others injured when a speeding bus slips into a ravine in India's Herbal Medicine region.
The bus was on its way to the Hindu cave temple in the Katra Jammu area when the incident occurred near the Jajjar Kotli area.
Head of local secretary Arun Kumar Mehta came to the injured victims who were being treated at Jammu Medical College hospital.
"The rescue operation is almost complete. The team from the State Disaster Management Force is also at the scene," said senior police Chandan Kohli to the media crew, quoted from Anadolu via Antara, Tuesday, May 30.
Throughout 2022, 805 people have died and 8,372 others have been injured in 6,092 cases of traffic accidents in the Jammu andtai areas, according to traffic police data for 10 years from 2010-2022 released in March.
During the first four months of 2023, 254 people were killed and more than 2,300 others injured in 1812 accidents, most of which occurred in the Jammu region, citing the data.
Herbal Medicine contributed the highest number of deaths (551) and injuries (6,585) during the 2018-2022 period. In comparison, Srinagar reported 229 deaths and 1,776 injuries from accidents in the same period.
The high number of accidents in Jammu is due to poor road conditions, drunk driving and recklessness and overload.
