Don't Panic! BMKG Declares The M 5.8 Earthquake In Bima NTB Has No Tsunami Potential

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) stated that the earthquake rocked Bima City, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), on Sunday afternoon at 15.40.57 WIB with a magnitude of 5.8 without the potential for a tsunami.

Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Daryono, explained that the results of the BMKG analysis showed that this earthquake had the latest parameters with a magnitude of 5.6.

Daryono said the epicenter of the earthquake was located at coordinates 7.84 degrees South Latitude and 118.74 degrees East Longitude, or precisely located in the sea at a distance of 67 kilometers northeast of Bima City, at a depth of 30 kilometers.

"By paying attention to the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake that occurred was a type of shallow earthquake due to the activity of the Flores Back Bow Up Fault (Flores Back Arc Thrust)," he said, quoted by ANTARA, Sunday, April 2.

He added that the results of the analysis of the source mechanism showed that the earthquake had an oblique thrust mechanism.

According to him, the earthquake had an impact and was felt in the Bima area with an intensity scale of III - IV MMI (The movement felt real in the house. Feels the vibration as if the truck is passing).

In addition, in the areas of Gowa, Makassar, Dompu, Sumbawa Besar, and West Sumbawa, with an intensity scale of III MMI (The vibration was felt real in the house and the vibration felt as if the truck was passing), and the Labuan Bajo, Mataram, Takalar, and Pangkep areas with an intensity scale of II - III MMI (The tremors were felt by several people, light objects that were hung swayed).

As of 15.55 WIB, the results of BMKG monitoring showed that there was one aftershock activity.

BMKG appealed to the public to remain calm and not be influenced by issues that cannot be justified.

"People should avoid buildings that are cracked or damaged by the earthquake. Check and make sure the building where you live is earthquake-resistant enough, or there is no damage due to earthquake vibrations that endanger the stability of the building before you return to the house," he said.
