Luis Diaz Follows In Kevin Keegan's Footsteps, Kenny Dalglish And Luis Suarez At Liverpool

JAKARTA - Liverpool announced changes to the jersey number of one of their players. Reds winger Luis Diaz decided to use a new number to navigate the 2023/2024 season.

Through the club's official website announced, Diaz will wear the number 7 jersey. Previously, he wore the number 23 worn since being signed from FC Porto in January 2022.

This number is sacred. The reason is, a number of legends have used this number including Billy Liddell, Ian Callaghan, Kevin Keane, Kenny Dalglish, Peter Beardsley, Nigel Clough, Steve McManaman, Vladimir Smicer, Harry Kewell, Robbie Keane, Luis Suarez, and finally James Milner.

"Luis Diaz will wear the number 7 jersey for Liverpool ahead of the 2023-24 season," wrote the club's official website.

"The Colombian striker will switch from the number 23 he has worn since arriving from FC Porto in January 2022 before the start of the new season," the club said in a statement, as reported by Antara.

Diaz replaces the owner of number 7 previously worn by Milner for eight years. The player has just decided to move to Brighton & Hove Albion.

"The number was recently vacated by James Milner, who will join Brighton & Hove Albion after his contract expires this summer," the club's official website wrote.

After strengthening the Reds for 1.5 seasons, Diaz made 47 appearances with 11 goals and eight assists. His best season came in his debut season in mid-2021/2022 where he scored six goals and five assists from 26 appearances in all competitions.

The positive score also brought Liverpool to win two trophies, namely the FA Cup and the League Cup and also led the club based in Anfield to finish second in the Premier League and become a Champions League finalist.

In the 2022/2023 season, the 26-year-old footballer also won one trophy, namely Community Shield.
