Jokowi Will Decide The Possibility Of Indonesia Joining BRICS

JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo will decide on the possibility of Indonesia joining the economic alliance of developing BRICS (Brazil, Russian, Indian, Chinese and South African) countries.

"It will be decided later," said Jokowi briefly in the Senayan area, Jakarta, quoted by ANTARA, Monday, August 7.

Jokowi conveyed this when confirmed about the widely circulated news about Indonesia's potential to join the trade alliance that was established in 2006.

Under the South African Presidency, BRICS will soon hold a Summit on August 22-24 in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Separately, Foreign Minister (Menlu) Retno Marsudi said there was a plan for President Jokowi's state visit to South Africa in the near future.

However, regarding the visit, Retno said that his party was still designing Jokowi's journey and agenda.

"The plan is that (Jokowi goes to South Africa). Later, wait, yes, until everything is ripe," said Retno when met at the Presidential Palace.

When confirmed directly whether the visit was to attend the BRICS Summit, Retno did not provide confirmation.

"I say this, I can't convey anything because coordination communication is being carried out," he explained.

South Africa took the BRICS presidency on January 1, 2023, after China.

Sebelumnya, Menteri Koordinator Bidang Maritim dan Investasi Luhut Binsar Pandjaitanmengatakan Presiden Jokowi akan menghadiri secara langsung Konferensi Tingkat Tinggi (KTT) BRICSdi Afrika Selatan pada akhir Agustus 2023.

"One of the important agendas we discussed was preparations for President Joko Widodo's participation in the upcoming BRICS Summit.

"This meeting provides a platform for productive discussions, with both parties hoping that an agreement will be signed regarding the import of cattle and soybeans," said Luhut in Jakarta, Wednesday (12/7).
