PT Banda Aceh Sentenced To Death 12 Narcotics Cases During 2023

BANDA ACEH - Banda Aceh High Court (PT) has decided as many as 392 cases from January to July 2023, of which 12 defendants were sentenced to death.

"There are 12 defendants who were sentenced to the heaviest main sentence, namely the death penalty. All the death penalty is a special criminal case for classifying narcotics abuse," said Banda Aceh High Court Chairman Suharjono in Banda Aceh as reported by ANTARA, Wednesday, August 2.

Suharjono conveyed that the 392 cases that had been decided included criminal, civil, and criminal law.

The 12 narcotics cases that were sentenced to death came from the Idi District Court (PN) in five cases, the Lhoksukon District Court in four cases and the Lhokseumawe District Court in three cases.

Specifically for five cases from PN Idi, the panel of appeal judges upheld the verdict handed down by the first-degree judge who first sentenced five defendants to death.

Because, he said, the defendants in the case were judged to be legally and convincingly proven guilty of committing a criminal act without the right to become intermediaries in the sale and purchase of narcotics class I in the form of non-plants with a weight of 30,000grams.

Meanwhile, four drug cases from the Lhoksukon District Court, namely the defendants, were legally and convincingly proven guilty of conspiracy to become intermediaries for narcotics class I in the form of non-plants with a weight of 60,679grams.

"Finally, in the three cases from the Lhokseumawe District Court, the defendants in the case were legally and convincingly proven guilty of committing a criminal act without the right to commit an evil conspiracy to receive narcotics class I, not plants reaching 140,147.07 grams," he said.

Regarding the high death penalty rate in Aceh, Suharjono believes the ability of the high judges at PT BNA in deciding the appeal case.

Because, according to him, the judges are considered to have experience, have maturity and wisdom in deciding the case, so that it can provide justice, certainty and benefit for the state.

"For me, what is important is that law enforcement must be firm indiscriminate, including in terms of the imposition of the death penalty if the requirements are met in the provisions to realize justice," he said.

"Evidence from the narcotics case reached 230,826gram or 230 kg. This is a large amount and can damage tens of thousands of the younger generation and Acehnese human resources," said Suharjono.
