JAKARTA - North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Saturday pledged to further strengthen his country's relations with China.

Kim praised Chinese President Xi Jinping for sending a delegation to the celebration of Victory Day in Pyongyang to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Korean War ceasefire (1950-1953).

In a meeting on Friday (28/7) with a Chinese delegation led by Chinese Communist Party Politburo Li Hongzhong, Kim thanked Beijing for his assistance during the Korean War in the early 1950s.

The two parties also reaffirmed their commitment to working together to deal with complicated international situations, developing friendship and cooperation, and accelerating "socialist development", according to a report by the government's KCNA news agency.

The celebration of Victory Day on Thursday (27/7) was also attended by a Russian delegation led by Defense Minister Sergey Shoygu.

The Korean war, which erupted on June 25, 1950, ended with the signing of a ceasefire agreement about three years later.

The agreement only ended the battle while peace had never been agreed upon.
