JAKARTA - The Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) targets the flood control of the Loji and Banger rivers in Pekalongan City, Central Java to be completed by the end of 2023.

"Usually the polder is in the form of a pond, but because it is in residential areas and ponds, we make a long storage where at the end we install a pump," said PUPR Minister Basuki Hadimuljono as quoted by ANTARA, Tuesday, July 25.

Basuki said that the handling of floods and runoffs of tidal waves in Pekalongan City used a polder system with components including the construction of sea embankments, movement dams, increased embankments, the construction of retention ponds, and the installation of pump houses.

The construction of embankments on the coastal areas of Pekalongan City aims to dry up areas that have always been inundated by tidal waves, as well as separate dry residential zones and pond zones that are left inundated. This project is targeted for completion by the end of 2023.

The Ministry of PUPR continues to complete the construction of flood control infrastructure and tidal waves of the Loji River and Banger River in Pekalongan City, Central Java. Pekalongan City coastal areas often face the potential for tidal flooding due to the tide of the North Java Sea.

The construction of flood control and tidal waves of the Loji River and Banger River is divided into three contractual packages. Package I includes the construction of retention ponds and ship mooring ponds, delegation areas, pump houses, movement dams, Loji River parapets, and gate regulator buildings.

The work was carried out by contractor PT Waskita Karya-agung (KSO) with funding for the 2021-2023 State Budget worth IDR 460.74 billion. Physical progress until June 11, 2023 for Package I reached 57.4 percent.

Meanwhile, Package II includes the normalization work of the Banger River, the installation of the Banger River parapet, the installation of parapets and the normalization of the Dead River, the work of the Slamaran Beach embankment, the work of the Degayu Beach embankment, the construction of the Seruni pump house, the construction of the coastal embankment of the Customs pump house, and the work of the coastal embankment of the Sengkarang-Silempeng pump house.

The work was carried out by contractor PT Brantas Abipraya-Maju (KSO) with a contract value of Rp282.67 billion and a physical progress of 66.43 percent.

Package III in the form of embankment and long storage work for the Lunanan (Zona 1,2,3 and 4), construction of the Sibulan pump house, long storage work and the Susukan pump house, long storage and Cumprit pump house, Loji River embankment, Gabus-Susukan tram road work as well as mechanical and electrical work.

Package III is carried out by contractor PT Jaya Konstruksi-BRP-APTA (KSO) with 2021-2023 APBN funding worth IDR 393.64 billion and construction progress has reached 79.13 percent.

In carrying out the work of developing flood control infrastructure and tidal waves, the Loji River and Banger River always coordinate and synergize with the Pekalongan City Government and the Central Java Provincial Government, especially in dealing with emerging social problems.

One of the challenges in this project is land acquisition in the construction of the Degayu Beach rob embankment and there are still 4 damaged ships in the work route of the Loji River parapet.
