VW Lowers Half The ID.3 Price To Compete In China's Automotive Market

JAKARTA - With so many local manufacturers, sophisticated electric vehicles at the price of tilting' are not something odd in China's automotive market. No wonder global producers have to face big challenges to compete with local producers.

China's Volkswagen (VW) recently surprised by lowering its electric hatchback price, ID.3, half of its normal price.

Reporting by Electrek on Friday, July 7, VW ID.3 is now being sold at a price of 125,900 yuan in China, around Rp264.3 million. This price decline was carried out in response to the increasing competition in the Chinese automotive market.

In recent years, VW has experienced a decline in sales of its electric vehicles, realizing that the market is dominated by local manufacturers such as BYD and the pioneer of electric vehicles from the United States, Tesla. VW only has a market share of 3 percent, while Tesla and BYD each have a market share of 9 percent and 24 percent in this segment.

VW ID.3 is produced at a factory owned by SAIC-Volkswagen in Shanghai, China. This hatchback is equipped with a 57.3 kWh battery capable of reaching a distance of up to 347 km according to WLTP calculations. While BYD Dolphin has a distance of 337 km.

But in contrast to China's declining market, VW managed to achieve satisfactory success in Europe after overcoming most supply chain problems. Sales of ID.3 and ID.4 increased dramatically.

High demand also occurs for ID. Buzz, with waiting times reaching 12-18 months. VW ID. Buzz will launch in the United States next year with the long wheelbase version.

VW ID.3 is the first electric car from VW to pave the way for families of "ID." which includes several models such as ID.4, ID.5, ID.6 (only available in China), ID.7, and electric van ID.Buzz.
