President Asks For Governance Of Placement Of Migrant Workers To Be Re-examined

JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) ordered the ranks of ministers to review the governance of the placement of Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI) so that the foreign exchange contributors get better protection.

"Mr. President asked the Coordinating Minister for the Economy (Airlangga Hartarto) for a two-week opportunity to review the management of the placement. Then he asked the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs (Mahfud MD) for his law enforcement," said the Minister of Manpower Ida Fauziyah after a meeting at the Presidential Palace complex, Jakarta, reported by ANTARA, Wednesday, August 2.

Ida explained the governance of the placement that will be studied, starting from departures in the country, when placing them in destination countries and during PMI's return to the country.

According to Ida, Indonesia actually already has a rigid basis in the governance of PMI placement as regulated in Law (UU) Number 18 of 2017 concerning the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers.

Later, said Ida, the assessment carried out by the government will focus on the implementation of the law. The central government will also pay close attention to the role of local governments from the provincial, district, city levels to the village apparatus in the chain of PMI placement governance.

Ida hopes that every element of the regional government can carry out its obligations as regulated in Law Number 18/2017

"From village heads to district, city governments, they have their own authority. So we hope that each of these regions carries out its obligations as regulated in Law Number 18/2017," said Ida.

Ida said that she would immediately hold a coordination meeting with the Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian to discuss the follow-up to President Jokowi's order regarding the assessment of PMI placement governance.
