Aceh BKSDA Evacuates Sumatran Orang Utan Who Is Trapped In Residents' Plantations
ACEH - The Aceh Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) evacuated a Sumatran orangutan (Pongo Abelii) who was trapped in a resident's plantation in Kaloy Village, Tamiang Hulu District, Aceh Tamiang Regency.Head of the Conservation Section Region I BKSDA Aceh Kamarudzaman said the orangutan was male, estimated to be around nine to 15 years old."The evacuation was carried out to prevent negative interactions between wildlife and humans. The orangutans were evacuated in good health and had wild nature," he said in Banda Aceh, Antara, Thursday, July 20.Kamarudzaman said the presence of orangutans in plantations was based on community information. Then, the Regional Conservation Resort (RKW) 11 Serbajadi and RKW 13 Langsa with partners and the community moved to the location."The team finally managed to catch the orangutan. From the results of the examination, the condition of the orangutan was healthy, there were no scars from sharp weapons or rifle bullets," he said.In addition, based on the results of the examination by the animal medical team, the orangutan still has wild nature, so it does not need to be taken to a quarantine place. The medical team recommends that it be feasible for the translocation process."Furthermore, the orangutan is translocated or transferred to an area with primary natural forest vegetation because the availability of feed and forest surface cover is sufficient," said Kamarudzaman. He said Sumatran orangutans are protected animals. Sumatran orangutans are only found on the island of Sumatra and are now critical and at high risk of extinction in the wild. Therefore, the Aceh BKSDA invites the public to preserve orangutans by not destroying forests that are their habitat, including capturing, injuring, maintaining, and trading both in life and death.
"We express our gratitude and appreciation to the people who have reported the whereabouts of orangutans and those who helped evacuate and rescue the protected animals," said Kamarudzaman.
