JAKARTA - The upgraded PlayStation 5 console  or PS 5 Pro, is expected to be released this year, but elements of it have already started leaking online.

This new unit from Sony is expected to arrive in time for one of the biggest gaming releases in the next few years – with Grand Theft Auto 6 promised to be released in 2025.

Insider Gaming revealed a number of features of the PS5 Pro, the main one being that it 'renders 45 percent faster than PS5' thanks to updates to the graphics processing unit (GPU). The leak also mentions 8K resolution and artificial intelligence.

Regarding the CPU (central processing unit), it remains the same as the original PS5, but the new 'high frequency' mode will give the CPU more power, at the expense of one percent lower GPU performance. However, this mode will increase CPU power by 10 percent.

Hard drive storage will also increase. The PS5 Pro will reportedly have a one terabyte hard drive, up from 825 gigabytes for the original PS5.

To further improve graphics, ray tracing - which is used in most modern games to provide high-quality visuals - is said to get a major two to fourx improvement over the base PS5 model.

And overall, GPU power is said to reach 33.5 teraflops, more than triple that of the original 2020 machine, offering 8K resolution. One of the prominent specifications mentions a 'custom machine learning architecture'.

“This is a tremendous jump and represents something we might see from one generation to the next rather than something incremental, like we saw with the PS4 Pro in the previous generation,” said Rob Dwiar, of TechRadar,  about these GPU upgrades.

This comes just weeks after Sony stated the PS5 console is currently entering the 'late stages of its life cycle.'

Sony's senior vice president, Naomi Matsuoka, said the company expects PS5 sales to start to decline starting next month after dominating the console competition since its release, selling more than 50 million units in that time.

“Looking ahead, the PS5 will enter the final stages of its life cycle. Therefore, we will place more emphasis on the balance between profitability and sales. "For this reason, we expect the annual sales rate of PS5 hardware to begin to decline starting next fiscal year," said Matsuoka.

Back in October, Sony revealed a slimmer, simpler version of the console, featuring a smaller and lighter build, as well as a removable disk drive and an additional terabyte of memory for storage.

Experts suggest that the PS6 will be released in November 2027 if the latest console release pattern is maintained.
