Google Updates Safe Browsing Feature in Chrome

JAKARTA – Google wants to optimize the Safe Browsing check in Chrome, but they don't want to increase latency. Therefore, they will improve the asynchronous checking system.

Currently, the Safe Browsing feature still works asynchronously so that users cannot view website pages until the checking process is complete. Even though the check went well, Google felt that the issue needed to be addressed.

Therefore, Google will launch a new asynchronous mechanism in Chrome 122. With this mechanism, checks will work in real-time so that users can see the appearance of website pages.

"We hope this will reduce page load time and improve user experience because real-time server-side checks will no longer block page loads, even if the site is found to be malicious afterwards," Google said in the Chromium Blog on Tuesday, February 13.

In addition to reduced latency issues, Google has also improved the quality of protection in the Safe Browsing system. The company has implemented new algorithms based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) in Safe Browsing.

By using these algorithms, Safe Browsing can block phishing and social engineering attacks. This blocking is able to work optimally because Google has improved the asynchronous checking system so that the latency is reduced.

According to Google, this phishing and social engineering blocking experiment would be successful if the Safe Browsing servers worked in real-time. The reason is, a warning sign will be displayed immediately before the user has time to click or type something.

“We have studied the timing data and concluded that it is highly unlikely that a user would have significantly interacted with (e.g. typed in a password) the site at the time the warning was displayed,” Google explained.
