JAKARTA - Automotive giant BYD managed to overtake Tesla in the last quarter of 2023 by selling 526,409 units of pure electric vehicles, while Tesla in its report only sent 484,507 vehicles.

For Tesla, total sales in the fourth quarter managed to exceed market forecasts and meet the 2023 target, but lost its position as the top EV producer to BYD.

Quoted from the Carnewschina page, Wednesday, January 3, if you look at the data shared, it can be seen that from the first quarter to the end of the year Tesla's sales have always surpassed BYD, but lost in the fourth quarter of 2023.

The two companies also recorded good sales, although for Tesla, there were still less than the annual internal target of CEO Elon Musk of 2 million units.

In more detail, BYD set a fourth-quarter record selling 942,651 cars. With a record 55 percent are fully electric vehicles (BEVs), and 45 percent are hybrid lies (PHEVs).

In total, the Shenzhen-based automaker sold 3,023,679 million electric, PHEV, and hybrid vehicles in 2023, up 62 percent from 2022, and about 52 percent are BEV 1,574,804 million.

Meanwhile, Tesla shipped 1,808,581 in 2023, up 38 percent from the previous year which only stood at 1,313,851 million. Obviously from the comparison of the data above, the record sales of pure electric vehicles during 2023 still belonged to Tesla.

But judging from the existing trends, it could be different for 2024 where there will be many surprises from the Chinese brand that will allow Tesla to overtake as the main leader of pure electric vehicles in the future.

It is known, BYD founded two new electric vehicle brands in 2023, namely YangWang and Fang Cheng Bao. BYD is also starting to invest in self-developed ADAS and autonomous driving systems.
