New Study Says, Quarter Music In Streaming Services Will Not Play At All Throughout 2023

JAKARTA - A new study found the fact that about a quarter of music on streaming services was not played at all throughout 2023.

According to a late 2023 Lumate report a company with a history of more than 30 years in measuring music consumption only 10 songs from 2023 which has more than one billion streams globally to date.

Helena Kosinski, VP Head of Global Lumite, shared a year-end visual report outlining important figures and trends over the past year. This includes seeing the overall availability of the ISRC (International Standard Recording Codes) and how many of them are consumed.

Created in pyramid form, at the top of the top, there are 10 songs from 2023 that have been played more than a billion times globally to date. The bottom of the pyramid indicates that all the minimal songs are played.

"We have 79.5 million ISRCs that had between zero and 10 streams last year and in fact, 45.6 million ISRCs on our system did not register a single stream in 2023," Kosinski explained via Loudwire.

So, as we all know, there's a lot of music out there and a lot of it doesn't play in large numbers.

In addition to the 79.5 million that are between zero and 10 streams, there are another 42.7 million ISRCs with around 11 to 100 streams. From there, there is an additional 30 million that have received between 101 to 1,000 streams during 2023.

Data shows 86.2 percent of nearly 158.6 million songs played below 1,000 times on streaming services. 45.6 million unplayed songs during 2023 were 24.8 percent of the total streaming catalog.

Overall, the data supports the idea that although streaming users are given the possibility of being unlimited to listen to new music, they are more likely to return to the songs they've streamed than looking for new or never-heard music.

Kosinski also explained the user's behavior, stating that super fans are bound to social signals, expressions, and the artist community, which indicates that flavors have remained a major factor in streaming.

The data comes two months after Spotify confirmed that all songs on the platform must have a minimum of 1,000 streams before they can get royalties.
