The Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) said it would implement five strategic policies to improve the performance of the global competitive furniture industry in 2024.

The reason is, the export value of the furniture product has reached 2.5 billion US dollars throughout 2022.

The five moves are facilitation of the availability of raw materials; facilitate the availability of skilled human resources; facilitate market improvement and strengthen market reference research; facilitate increased productivity, capacity and product quality as well as conducive business climate facilitation and increased investment.

Director General of Agro Industry of the Ministry of Industry Putu Juli Ardika said, facilitation of the availability of raw materials was carried out through improvement efforts that focused on providing better access.

"So, the ideal furniture raw material supply chain pattern is achieved through the facilitation of the Furniture Industrial Baku Material Logistics Center, which is facilitated for wood raw materials starting in 2022. Meanwhile, for 2024 it will be facilitated for rattan raw materials," Putu said in a written statement received by VOI, Wednesday, January 24.

Next, facilitation of the availability of competent human resources will be carried out through optimizing the role of Polytechnic Furniture and Kayu Processing in Kendal. This vocational education unit belonging to the Ministry of Industry has implemented a dynamic curriculum in accordance with market needs.

Meanwhile, in an effort to facilitate market improvement and strengthen market reference research, the Ministry of Industry often facilitates the participation of furniture industry players in national and international level exhibitions.

"The government is also aggressively promoting APBN spending through the use of TKDN products, which can also be an opportunity for furniture industry players to improve the domestic market," he said.

One of the facilities efforts to increase productivity, capacity and product quality is carried out in technology lines through the Wood Processing Industry Restructuring / Machinery Program in the form of providing reimbursement for the replacement of part of machine/equipment purchases according to the criteria.

The program aims to support engine/equipment technology updates in increasing productivity.

"In addition, the Ministry of Industry is also implementing a furniture design development program, which is a collaboration workshop between furniture designers and industry players. Then, improving product quality is also supported by the implementation of SNI and SKKNI," said Putu.

In addition to these policies, Putu assessed, the government also continues to strive to create a conducive business climate for furniture industry players, such as through providing tax incentive facilities in the form of tax allowances and facilitating export and import procedures.

"In addition to continuing to increase the export market both to traditional and non-traditional markets, furniture industry players are expected not to leave the domestic market. With more efficient production innovations, domestic consumers can also enjoy quality furniture products made by the nation's children," he said.

Then, along with the increasing environmental awareness of furniture consumers, it is hoped that it can spur industry players to continue to make improvements in production.

"Currently, our furniture industry players can more efficiently utilize sources from sustainable raw materials, are more environmentally friendly, participate in implementing circular economy and play a role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, but can still produce eco-design-based products," said Putu.

Indonesia is considered to still have great opportunities in developing the furniture and furniture industry because it is supported by the availability of abundant raw materials, including various types of wood which include meranti wood, teak, mahogany and acacia.

Efforts to downstream or increase the added value of natural resources need to be continuously encouraged to boost national economic growth.

On the other hand, Indonesia is a source of 80 percent of the world's rotators and Indonesia also has the potential for bamboo which has a great opportunity to develop downstream products.
