Assisted By The K9 Team, Bareskrim Failed Drug Smuggling At Bakauheni Port

JAKARTA - Another drug smuggling attempt occurred through sea transportation. Fortunately, the Directorate of Drug Crimes at the National Police Criminal Investigation Agency and the Sabhara Baharkam Corps Narcotics K9 Team managed to thwart the attempt that took place at Bakauheni Port, Lampung.

Head of the Public Information Division of the National Police's Public Relations Division, Police Commissioner Erdi A. Chaniago in Jakarta, Saturday, said the K9 team managed to sniff out the presence of drugs smuggled through the Sunda Strait crossing.

"The results were secured by eight suspects with evidence of 80 thousand grams of crystal methamphetamine, 1,006 ecstasy pills and 2,309 grams of marijuana," he said, confiscated from Antara.

Erdi explained that the K9 Team sniffer dogs were deployed in the Seaport Interdiction Operation carried out by the Directorate of Narcotics Crimes at the National Police Criminal Investigation Unit in Bakauheni.

The operation lasted for 10 days from March 3 to 12, 2024.

"The operation involved six K9 dogs who had the ability to detect the presence of drugs," he said.

The target of the operation is vehicles passing to the ferry crossing of Bakauheni Port, Lampung, by tracking drugs that are suspected to be contained in vehicles, luggage and people.

"When K9 sniffs out drugs, it will provide a code in the form of bite behavior, scratched or pulsed," he explained.

Furthermore, the evidence will soon be secured by the handler or protector of the K9 unit for further action.

"As long as the activities run safely and conducively," he said.

The six K9 dogs involved come from certain races, namely German sheperd, Belgian melanois and Lambrador which have the smell power of 600 million receptors and currently have not been replaced with any detection tool.

The six K9 dogs are controlled by six trained handlers and eight protective personnel who already have K9 handler certification competencies and graduated from DS ATTA training in the United States.
