PADANG - Mount Marapi in West Sumatra again experienced an eruption with a height of volcanic ash column reaching 1,000 meters today at around 13.32 WIB. Head of the Volcano Observation Post (PGA) Marapi Ahmad Rifandi said the height of the ash column was observed to be approximately 1,000 meters above the peak or 3,891 meters above sea level. The ash column was observed gray with thick intensity leaning towards the east. "This eruption was recorded on a seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 30.3 millimeters and a duration of 36 seconds," he explained in Bukittinggi as quoted by Antara, Thursday, March 14. He emphasized that despite the eruption, Marapi's status is still at level III (standby) with the recommendation that the community does not enter and do not carry out activities within a radius of 4.5 kilometers from the eruption center (verbeek area). "If there is ash rain, people are advised to use nasal and mouth covering masks to avoid respiratory tract disorders, as well as other equipment to protect the eyes and skin," said Ahmad Rifandi. According to him, this eruption became the first since the beginning of Ramadan as well as cutting off Marapi's record of zero eruptions for five consecutive days. The last time the Marapi eruption occurred was on Friday (8/3) with three eruptions accompanied by 82 gusts. Furthermore, Marapi never experienced another eruption even though there were still gusts, until finally the eruption occurred again and made residents in the local area worried again.

"There was a bit of vibration and sound, but the puff of smoke from the top of the mountain was very clear because the clean weather was not cloudy. We are worried that the eruption will continue even though it had previously started to look normal," said a resident of Agam Regency, Rifki Syaiful.
