JAKARTA- United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday warned of the dangers of rising geothermal temperatures and asked governments in the world to keep their promises against climate change.

The International Panel for Climate Change said that (an increase in Earth's temperature) that penetrated 1.5 degrees Celsius, although only temporary, could be catastrophic, Guterres said in a video broadcast at Petersberg's Climate Dialogue meeting in Berlin as reported by ANTARA, Tuesday, May 2.

Guterres warned the Earth's surface temperature would rise 2.8 degrees Celsius by the end of the century if countries in the world defended their current policies. He called for closer cooperation to end their dependence on fossil fuels.

He also emphasized that industrial countries must fulfill their promises and provide financial support to underdeveloped countries to invest in clean energy.

"Climate crisis demands honesty. We can only solve this problem if we admit it and don't doubt it," Guterres said.

"Regarding climate, we actually know what to do, when to do it, and why. However, we have been putting it aside for too long," he said.

Germany hosted a two-day climate conference, which presents representatives from around 40 countries, to discuss concrete steps in overcoming the climate crisis.

The conference aims to prepare a basis to generate various negotiations at the COP28 Climate Change Conference which will be held in the United Arab Emirates by the end of this year.
