JAKARTA - A tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 rocked Turkey, Greece and Bulgaria on Friday, October 30, 18.51 WIB. The earthquake caused a tsunami but had no impact on Indonesian territory.

"People are advised to remain calm because the tsunami will not affect Indonesian territory," said Head of the Earthquake and Tsunami Center for the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Rahmat Triyono in Jakarta, as reported by Antara, Friday.

He explained that the epicenter of the earthquake was located at coordinates 37.89 North Latitude and 26.84 East Longitude, located in the sea at a distance of 17 km northwest of Samos, Greece at a depth of 10 km.

Based on the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake that occurred was a shallow earthquake due to the deformation of shallow crustal rocks in the area.

The results of the analysis of the source mechanism show that earthquakes have a normal fault movement mechanism.

Earthquake shocks were felt by Turkey, Greece, Bulgaria and North Macedonia. The earthquake caused a local tsunami which was recorded at tide gauge stations in Greece, namely Syros station about 8 cm, Kos around 7 cm, Plomari about 5 cm and Kos Marina about 4 cm, while the tide gauge station in Turkey has no data.
