Following the Footsteps of Other Countries, Kominfo is Preparing AI Ethics Gguidelines

JAKARTA - Like most other countries, the Indonesian government through the Ministry of Communication and Information (Kominfo) is also drafting a Circular Letter from the Minister of Communication and Information regarding Ethical Guidelines for Artificial Intelligence.

Deputy Minister of Communication and Information Nezar Patria stated that in the future, this Circular Letter from the Minister of Communication and Information will become an ethical guide for organizations or companies in using AI.

Nezar explained that there will be an understanding of artificiality as well as general guidelines for values, ethics, and control of consulting, analysis, and programming activities that utilize artificial intelligence.

The Deputy Minister of Communication and Information stated that the existence of guidelines will provide AI governance so that it is optimally useful. According to him, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has published a 'Recommendation on the Ethics of AI', which was later adopted by 193 member countries as an AI Ethics framework.

"The UNESCO document is a reference for the Indonesian government to design AI governance that still prioritizes aspects of security, proportionality, transparency, human rights, equality, culture, and sustainability at every stage of the AI ​​system," he said as quoted by the official Kominfo broadcast, Thursday, November 23.

At a different time, namely on Tuesday, November 21, Nezar said that this circular letter was the result of Kominfo discussions with multistakeholders. Starting from industrial players, startups, academics, researchers, and of course UNESCO.

Deputy Minister Nezar Patria also gave an example of the Singapore Government's efforts to use Singapore's Model AI Governance Framework to ensure the role of humans in the use of AI.

"China has also just issued regulations regarding generative AI, and mitigating AI's risk of social instability. Meanwhile, the European Union is currently processing its newest regulatory framework, namely the European Union Act, which will regulate AI based on the level of risk," he explained.

Nezar believes that the use of AI technology will make it possible to create something extraordinary. According to him, this can be realized if we step together to provide governance for the use of AI that is inclusive, productive, and empowering.
