JAKARTA - Meta Platform Inc., and TikTok were given one week by the European Commission to provide details on the steps taken to address the spread of terrorist content, violence, and hate speech on their platform. This comes a week after Elon Musk, the owner of platform X, was also asked to do the same.

The EU executive agency said on Thursday, October 19 that it had sent requests for information to the two companies. This is because researchers have shown disinformation after Hamas' attack on Israel more than a week ago.

The European Commission could open an investigation into these companies if they are dissatisfied with Big Tech's response.

According to a new online content regulation known as the recently applicable Digital Services Act (DSA), large online platforms are required to make more efforts to remove illegal and harmful or risky content, or be fined up to 6% of their global turnover.

"Meta must provide the requested information to the Commission on October 25, 2023 for questions related to crisis responses, and on November 8, 2023, to protect election integrity," the Commission said.

"TikTok must provide the requested information to the Commission on October 25, 2023 for questions related to crisis responses, and on November 8, 2023, to protect the integrity of online children's elections and security," he added.
