JAKARTA - Using artificial intelligence (AI) technology, Pinterest algorithms are sought to better represent users with various body shapes and skin tones.

Previously, Pinterest had introduced skin tone technology, which allows users to search for fashion that matches their self-reflecting skin tone.

"Currently, Pinterest introduces new body-type technologies into its inclusive AI innovation series. The first technology that uses shapes, sizes, and shapes to identify various body types in more than 5 billion images on the platform," Pinterest wrote in an announcement on its official website.

The company says that the idea is inspired by user behavior and cultural critical discussions around body representation.

"With the addition of advanced new body-type technology into our series of inclusive AI efforts, we have improved the representation of various body types on the platform by 5x across all searches related to women's fashion in the US," said Sabrina Ellis, Head of Pinterest Products.

With the increased understanding of visual content through computer vision technology, Pinterest has formed its algorithm to improve body-type representations and skin tones across the search results and related Pins.

"For example, if users trace the inspiration for night dating clothes, they will see results that cover various body types and skin tone ranges," the company further explained.

In this development, Pinterest partnered with the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance (NAAFA), model advocate and size Tess Holliday, and Pinterest Creator Natalie Craig, Kellie Brown, and Stefany Brito to consult on plus-size community needs.
