JAKARTA - TikTok decided to comply with the EU's Digital Service Act (DSA), by creating a special For You page for the country.
Europeans will have the option to exit the personalized algorithm-based page. Instead, TikTok will feature popular videos.
"The page of For You and Live will later show popular videos from where they live and around the world, rather than recommending content based on their personal interests," TikTok said in its announcement, quoted Monday, August 7.
Likewise, when they use unpersonalized searches. Europeans will see results containing popular content from the region and in the language of their choice.
"The page of Following and Friends will continue to show the creators they follow, but in chronological order, not based on the profile of the audience," said TikTok.
In addition, to protect the privacy of TikTok teenagers in Europe, accounts under the age of 16 will be set to private by default and content cannot be recommended on the For You page.
"Now, users in Europe aged 13-17 will no longer see personalized ads based on their activity inside or outside TikTok," TikTok said.

As for advertising, TikTok states, currently users, not only in Europe already have controls over ads they can see and they can enable or disable personalized ads in the settings menu.
"We will continue not only fulfill our regulatory obligations, but also seek to establish new standards through innovative solutions and by collaborating with our industrial partners, regulators, lawmakers, and civil society," said TikTok.
For information compiled from Mashable, DSA requires very large social media platforms including TikTok, X, Instagram and Facebook to give users the option not to accept recommendations for personalization results.
The law also mandates that social media should be more transparent about content moderation, so TikTok will notify users of more content moderation decisions than ever before.
This change, said TikTok, will take effect in Europe before the deadline for implementing the DSA on August 28.
