JAKARTA - Amazon.com Inc. is temporarily halting construction of six new office buildings in Bellevue and Nashville to re-evaluate designs that are suitable for hybrid work.

According to the tech giant's management on Friday, July 15, construction pauses and delays will not affect Amazon's hiring plans. Jeff Bezos' company is currently creating 25,000 jobs in Bellevue and another 5,000 in Nashville.

"The pandemic has significantly changed the way people work ... Our office is a long-term investment and we want to ensure that we design it in a way that meets the future needs of our employees," said John Schoetler, vice president of Global Real Estate and Facilities at Amazon. , as quoted by Reuters.

Separately, Bloomberg News also reported on Friday that parent companies Facebook, Meta Platforms and Amazon have pulled back from plans to expand their offices in New York City.

Meta has decided not to take up the additional 300,000 square feet of space at 770 Broadway, a building near Astor Place, where they already have offices and Amazon has reduced the amount of space it will lease from JPMorgan Chase & Co at Hudson Yards, the report said.

"There are often a number of reasons why we don't go ahead with certain deals, including office use. The last few years have brought new possibilities around the way we connect and work," a Meta spokesperson told Reuters without confirming or denying the report.

"We remain firmly committed to New York and look forward to opening Farley in the coming months," the spokesperson added.

Amazon declined to comment on the report. However, the delay in building the office is more because the company sees greater benefits from the new tradition of working from home, which is quite effective.

Amazon as well as Meta have seen many advantages by minimizing work in the office. The opposite actually happened to Tesla, because they actually asked their workers to return to the office.
