JAKARTA - OnlyFans, an online subscription platform known for having adult content, has launched a feature for users to display a verified NFT as a profile picture. This was announced by a source at the company on Thursday, November 10.

The UK-based company introduced the feature last December. They join social media companies like Twitter and Reddit that have been exploring ways to incorporate digital tokens on their platforms.

OnlyFans, launched in 2016, thrived during the pandemic as it became a way for content creators to earn money by selling content directly to customers.

NFT, or non-exchangeable tokens, is a type of digital asset that exists in blockchain listing technology. Their popularity has soared over the past year, as people buy art and sports highlight videos as NFTs.

"Our mission is to empower creators to reach their full potential," OnlyFans Chief Executive Officer, Ami Gan, said in a statement to Reuters. "This feature is the first step in exploring the role NFT can play on our platform."

OnlyFans says it only supports NFT printed on the Ethereum blockchain. The creator's NFT profile image will show an Ethereum icon to mark it as original.

Alphabet's YouTube this week outlined its own plans around NFT, saying it could offer a way to verify the legitimacy of digital assets using its video library. NFT sales surged last year, but critics say fraud, copyright theft, and other predatory behavior are all too common.

Instagram head Adam Mosseri also said that the company is working on NFT.

In December, OnlyFans founder Tim Stokely said he was stepping down as CEO and would be replaced by Gan, who was previously chief marketing officer.
