JAKARTA - A number of global automotive manufacturers are preparing for the fully electric vehicle (EV) era. This trend is reflected in the steps taken by several automotive industry players, who plan to increase the production of environmentally friendly vehicles.
Mercedes-Benz, as one of the main manufacturers, has strengthened its position towards the transition. The German manufacturer has established a 'Ambition 2039' business strategy, which aims to increase production of more EVs and its own charging facilities. However, not all markets are ready to follow these changes.
Kariyanto Hardjosoemarto, Director of Sales and Marketing of PT Mercedes-Benz Distribution Indonesia (MBDI), explained that the implementation of this plan will depend on market readiness to deal with the transition to full electrification. If the market is not ready, Mercedes-Benz will continue to provide vehicles with internal combustion engines (ICE).
"It all depends on the readiness of each country to deal with this transition. If the market is not ready, of course we will not immediately leave conventional vehicles. We will continue to provide products both with internal combustion engines and EVs," said Kariyanto to VOI in Jakarta, Tuesday, November 14.
He also added that Indonesia is currently not fully ready to face this transition compared to the European region and North America, both in terms of public revenue and infrastructure. Even so, Mercedes-Benz has a target to completely switch to EVs.
"Maybe compared to Europe or the US, they are better prepared in the EV transition than Indonesia. However, we also have a target to go that way," added Kariyanto.
As is well known, the manufacturer, known as the 'Silver Arrow', will implement a number of steps to achieve 'Ambition 2039', including the first step in increasing production of more than half of the new hybrid or electric cars by 2030, followed by the full achievement of neutral carbon by 2039.
