Film Autobiography is Selected to Represent Indonesia at the 2024 Oscar

JAKARTA - The film Autobiography was officially selected by the Oscar Indonesia Selection Committee (Komsel) to take part in the competition in the International Feature Film category at the 2024 Academy Awards in the United States. Autobiography stars Kevin Ardilova, Arswendy Bening Swara, Yusuf Mahardika, Lukman Sardi, and Rukman Rosadi.

The film Autobiography has won many awards. Among others, Fipreci Prize Venice Film Festival 2022, Best film Adelaide Film Festival 2022, Tokyo Filmex Grandprix 2022, Best Film Singapore Film Festival 2022, Golden Hanoman Jogja NETPAC Asian Film Festival 2022, Best Film QCinema Philippines 2022, Best Film Malaysia International Film Festival, Best Screenwriter Asia Pacific Screen Award 2023, Citra Cup Original Script FFI 2022, Best Actor Marrakech International Film Festival 2022, NETPAC Award Taipei Golden horse Film Festival 2022.

This decision was taken by Komsel Oscar after watching this film and other superior films and followed by a discussion at Studio XXI Plaza Senayan, Monday, September 11 evening. Komsel consists of nine film people such as Slamet Rahardjo, Garin Nugroho, Ilham Bintang, Alim Studio, Cesa David Luckmansyah, Ratna Riantiarno, Nur Hidayat, Sha Ine Febriyanti and Deddy Mizwar.

Komsel selects and selects one film title from around 100 national productions which will be broadcast from 1 December 2022 to 31 October 2023. Komsel was formed by the Indonesian Film Company Association (PPFI) at the end of last July and has received approval from the Academy Awards.

The Academy Awards in the International Feature Film category are awarded annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to non-American films whose dialogue is not in English.

This category started at the 1956 Academy Awards. This year the 96th Oscars will be held on March 10, 2024.

The Story of a Retired General. The film Autobiography produced by KawanKawan Media, directed by Makbul Mubarak, tells the story of the emotional journey and moral conflict of young man Rakib with a retired general named Purna in search of the true meaning of family and faith.

When Rakib begins to investigate Purna's past, he discovers surprising facts that are the opposite of his expectations. The film had its international premiere at the 2022 Venice Film Festival on September 2.

Indonesian films have been participating in the Oscar category in this category since 1987, but so far have not succeeded in winning the prestigious trophy. The film "Nagabonar" directed by MT Risyaf with main actors Deddy Mizwar and Nurul Arifin is the first Indonesian film to be submitted to the Academy Awards.

Apart from Nagabonar, Indonesian films that have competed in the Oscars include Surat from Prague, Turah, Perempuan Tanah Jahanam, Kucumbu Body Indahku and most recently, Missing Home (Ngeri Ngeri Sedap).

In the Komsel meeting, Deddy again hoped for the support and active role of all parties related to the film industry to make Indonesia's participation in the Oscars a success.

More specifically, the government's role was emphasized by the actor who plays Naga Bonar in financing the promotion of the film at the Oscars.
