JAKARTA - The government through the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) is targeting 16 Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) technology projects to operate before 2030.

It is known that this technology can be a solution for increasing oil and gas production to support the target of 1 million barrels per day of oil and 12 billion cubic feet per day of natural gas in 2030, while supporting emission reductions towards Net Zero Emissions in 2060.

"Currently there are 16 CCS/CCUS projects in Indonesia which are still in the study and preparation stages, and most of them are targeted to operate before 2030," said the Director of Oil and Gas Engineering and Environment at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Mirza Mahendra to the media, Wednesday, February 8.

Mirza further explained that the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources had prepared a draft Ministerial Regulation regarding the Implementation of CCS/CCUS which is currently still in the inter-Ministry harmonization stage.

"The most significant is CCUS Tangguh BP Berau which has received Plan of Development approval. Apart from that there is also a Huff and Puff CO2 Injection Pilot Test by Pertamina in the Jatibarang Field which is still on a well scale but the results are very encouraging," he added.

Meanwhile, a representative from LEMIGAS, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Dadan Damayandri, explained that LEMIGAS had conducted many CCUS studies from 2003 to the present, including with Japex Japan and Pertamina.

"In the future LEMIGAS will carry out a study on mapping the potential of Depleted Reservoir and Saline Aquifer for CCS/CCUS Hub and Clustering, as well as a study on carbon utilization for the production of blue hydrogen methanol and support the Directorate General of Oil and Gas in formulating policies regarding CCS/CCUS," concluded Dadan.
