Belarus Supports Russia Invasion Of Ukraine, South Korea Takes Strict Action

JAKARTA - Belarus's move to support Russia's invasion of Ukraine made South Korea take firm steps. South Korea itself has stated, against Russia's actions to attack Ukraine.

South Korea's foreign ministry said their government would implement export controls on Belarus because it "effectively supports Russia's invasion of Ukraine," Reuters reported.

The ministry did not provide further details regarding what steps would be taken. But they say the policy will be implemented in a similar way to what South Korea has imposed on Russia.

As is well known, Seoul condemned Moscow and called Russia an "armed invasion" of Ukraine.

South Korea said in February it would tighten export controls on Russia by banning shipments of strategic goods.

South Korea has also joined Western countries in blocking Russian banks from accessing the SWIFT international payment system.

"The Korean government decided today to implement an export control policy against Belarus, given that Belarus has effectively supported Russia's invasion of Ukraine," the foreign ministry said in a statement.

Russia called its actions in Ukraine a "special operation".

In February, Russia's Ambassador to South Korea, Andrey Kulik, regretted the sanctions imposed by South Korea.

He accused South Korea of taking this step because Seoul is under strong pressure from the United States and its Western partners.
