JAKARTA - Sports promoter Eddie Hearn believes Canelo Alvarez should take on Gennady Golovkin in September instead of trying to avenge his loss to WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol.

Hearn did not reveal why the trilogy fight between Canelo (57-2-2, 39 KOs) and Golovkin in September was so important. However, it could be due to the advanced age of the Kazakh fighter.

The 40-year-old Golovkin (42-1-1, 37 KOs) whom we saw in his last bout on April 9 against WBA middleweight champion Ryota Murata looks old and has serious stamina issues.

The way Golovkin evaded Murata's attacks in the first four rounds was quite unsettling, considering that the Japanese fighter was never rated highly and was only seen as a champion on paper by many.

Besides, Murata is 36 years old and hasn't fought in three years. The beating of Golovkin by a weak champion like Murata is a clear indication that he should hang up his gloves immediately.

Hearn is clearly worried that if Canelo doesn't fight GGG - Golovkin's nickname - now, the Kazakh fighter will lose his next bout against whoever his rivals are.

"I spoke with Canelo yesterday. We will speak on Monday to see what happens next," Eddie Hearn told Matchroom Boxing quoted from Marca, Tuesday, May 24. "We knew the Canelo vs GGG fight would be there; it's a trilogy."

"Maybe it's the only chance. We have to make the fight happen, but he (Canelo) really wants to fight (re)dmitry Bivol," said Hearn.

"I think he will only fight GGG if he plays Bivol (in the rematch). But, we will talk to Canelo on Monday and make a decision next week."

In a recent TalkSPORT article, when asked whether the Bivol rematch clause had been activated by Canelo, Hearn replied, "No, not yet. We will have a conversation with Canelo this week and over the weekend."
