JAKARTA - MotoGP will have a new season-opening race in 2023 following the renovation of the Lusail International Circuit in Qatar.

The circuit, which held the race at night, has extended its commitment to enliven MotoGP until 2031.

The circuit will also undergo major renovations as well as remodeling the paddock area and other supporting facilities as well as constructing a new area for spectators.

"Lusail will host the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix following the completion of work, which means the event will not be the opening series, as it has been since 2007," Dorna said in a statement.

"In exchange, the race will be shifted to the end of the season."

The fast and flowing character circuit also made its debut in the Formula 1 calendar in November last year as one of the races in the Middle East region.

Qatar, which is hosting the 2022 World Cup, also has a 10-year contract to host Formula 1 from 2023, with the possibility of moving the race to a new circuit, Reuters reports.
