JAKARTA - Indonesian men's singles badminton player Jonatan Christie failed to bring home the title from the 2022 Asian Championships. That was after he lost to Malaysian representative Lee Zii Jia.

Jonathan surrendered in straight sets 17-21, 21-23 in the match which was held at Muntinlupa Sports Complex, Manila, Philippines, on Sunday, May 1, 2022.

Early in the first set, both pairs shared a fair share of the first eight points before Lee Zii Jia scored three consecutive points to lead 7-4. Jonathan struggled to level the score after that so he had to trail narrowly 9-11 at the interval.

After the break, Jonathan managed to catch up with his opponent's points. The owner of the 2018 Asian Games gold medal successfully equalized the score to 13-13.

Unfortunately, Lee Zii Jia managed to turn things around and then lead 18-13. After that, Jonathan's attempt to win the first set was unsuccessful.

Jonathan immediately scored three consecutive points at the start of the second set. However, the advantage was quickly equalized by representatives of Malaysia to 3-3.

The chase of numbers took place after that. Lee Zii Jia then trailed 5-7 before sealing it 9-9, 10-10, and taking a narrow 11-10 lead at the interval.

Jonathan immediately scored three points in a row after the break to regain the lead. Lee Zii Jia then got up and made it 19-16.

Jonathan made four consecutive points to win again. However, Lee Zii Jia successfully rose and won the match with a score of 23-21.

This is Jonathan's second straight loss to Lee Zii Jia in the six meetings between them. Jojo was previously still leading 4-1 win-loss before this match.

Meanwhile, Jojo's other defeat against Lee Zii Jia occurred in the last 32 of the All England in March.

In this year's Asian Championship, Indonesia brought home the title of men's doubles. The title was presented by the pair Pramudya Kusuma Wardana/Yeremia Erich Rambitan who beat Malaysian representatives Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik.
