JAKARTA - Former world number one Serena Williams has signaled she will return to court to compete at Wimbledon in June, exactly a year since she last played on tour at the same Grand Slam.

Citing Antara on Friday, Williams, 40, limped out of last year's first-round match at Wimbledon in tears with a leg injury.

She also missed the Olympics in Tokyo and the US Open in 2021 with a hamstring injury, as well as the Australian Open earlier this year.

In an Instagram Story post with NFL quarterback Aaron Rodgers Thursday, Williams said: "We've been talking about my comeback and he has excited me and got me ready for Wimbledon. Can't wait!"

When Rodgers asked her about a potential return to play at the US Open, she added: "Wimbledon before the US Open, I have to play Wimbledon first. Fun!"

Wimbledon runs from June 27 to July 10. Williams has won the grasscourt major seven times, with her last success in 2016.

Her old coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, told Reuters he is now working full time with two-time Grand Slam champion Simona Halep after speaking with Williams.

Williams, seeking a 24th major title since winning her last Grand Slam title at the 2017 Australian Open, has dropped to the women's ranking of 246.

She reached the finals at four Grand Slams after giving birth to her daughter Olympia in 2017 but lost in straight sets on each occasion.
