JAKARTA The Kretek Girl series that aired on Netfix is still a hot topic of conversation among the Indonesian people since its premiere on November 2, 2023.

Starring top artists such as Dian Sastrowardoyo, Ario Bayu, Putri Marino, and Arya Saloka, Kretek Girls are currently ranked first in the most popular series on Netflix Indonesia today.

Throughout the series, Jeng Yah, nicknamed Maritime Affairs, wore a kebaya with a monochrome color. Most often black, although several times Jeng Yah also appeared with a white kebaya. The black kebaya that Jeng Yah often wears turns out to be Kebaya Janggan.

This shirt was worn by Ratna Ningsih, the wife of Prince Dipenogoro, who always accompanied her to fight against the Dutch. The design of the Janggan Kebaya is also said to have been inspired by the European military uniform model at the time, having a tall collar covering the neck, but not having buttons.

Janggan itself comes from the word jangga' which means neck in Javanese. Janggan's kebaya is considered to describe the nature, beauty andappropriation of Javanese Palace women in general.

Janggan's kebaya resembles a surjan, a typical Javanese male suit with an upright collar covering the neck area. In the surjan shirt there are three pairs of buttons on the front of the neck. This surjan shirt is used by the servants of the Yogyakarta Palace.

However, there is a difference between surjan and Kebaya Janggan. In Kebaya Janggan, the buttons are located from the neck to the left of the body, equipped with buttons covering the neck.

Janggan Kebaya cloth is identical to black. Not without reason why black is chosen for Janggan Kebaya. The black color is considered to symbolize the firm and simple character of a woman.

For this reason, Pakan's lawyer, the designer who designed the Cretek Girl dress, finally chose the Janggan Kebaya to be used by Jeng Yah. He assessed that the black color of Kebaya Janggan was right to describe Jeng Yah's character.

"Black is the most basic color, in addition to white. Black celebration in the midst of a world that moves forward is a form of the firmness of an OWNer," wrote Pakan's pocket on his Instagram account.

"Black people will not change their color even though they are splashed with various colors, so will RAISE. Likewise, the selection of very specific kebaya, the combination of surjan, Janggan Kebaya, and the classical kebaya is a symbol of the complexity of the spirit of Mituhyah who is loyal to the roots but ready to change the world," he added.

Citing the keraton.perpusnas.go.id page, the cloth to make Janggan Kebaya should not be brogate. This is done to maintain the simplicity of the design and distinctive impression of Kebaya Janggan.

Janggan's kebaya suddenly went viral as the Kretek Girl series exploded, played by Dian Sastrowardoyo. In fact, this kebaya is actually quite often used by a row of artists such as Adinia Wirasti in the pre-wedding photo session with Michael Wahr.

The viral Kebaya Janggan is a blessing for tailors. This was acknowledged by Gielang Gumilang through X's social media account.

"A few days after the screening of the Kretek Girl, I made an upload about Kebaya Janggan. After that, it took about 12 hours, orders exploded," said Gielang on the @gielangs account on Thursday (9/11/2023).

He admitted that he received 50 orders from Kebaya Janggan after a week of screening of Kretek Girls. The price is set from IDR 375 thousand with a work time of around 12-18 days. Gielang actually offers a variety of color choices, but black is still the most ordered favorite.

On the same account, Gielang even admitted that he had closed the second period of Janggan Kebaya pre-order with a total of 50 orders. He admitted that he did not want to take too many orders to maximize his production.
