Deputy Chairman of Commission III of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Rano Alfath, appreciates the steps taken by the Supreme Court (MA) which has imposed disciplinary sanctions on 206 judges and judicial apparatus throughout 2024.

Rano assessed that the Supreme Court's move was part of reform to maintain public trust in judicial institutions.

"Giving disciplinary sanctions to hundreds of judges and judicial apparatus throughout 2024 is proof of strengthening internal supervision carried out by the Supreme Court. We certainly encourage the judicial reform process to continue so that public trust is maintained," said Rano Alfath, Monday, January 30.

Previously, the Chairman of the Supreme Court Sunarto submitted data on the imposition of disciplinary sanctions to judges and judicial apparatus at the Year-End Reflection event at Balairung MA, Friday, December 27.

Of the 4,313 complaints received by the Supreme Court Supervisory Agency throughout the year, 95.4 percent or 4,116 complaints have been processed, while 197 cases are still being handled.

Based on the complaints processed, as many as 206 disciplinary sanctions were imposed, consisting of 79 severe sanctions, 31 moderate sanctions, and 96 light sanctions. The Judicial Commission (KY) also contributed by proposing 63 judges to be subject to disciplinary sanctions.

Rano Alfath also praised the steps taken by the Chairman of the Supreme Court Sunarto, who publicly disclosed disciplinary action data during 2024. According to him, the number of sanctions imposed shows that the Supreme Court does not remain silent on various violations within the judiciary.

"The transparency shown by the Supreme Court is a step that should be appreciated. This shows the commitment of the Chairman of the Supreme Court to improve the justice system and restore public trust," said Rano.

Rano assessed that the Supreme Court under Sunarto's leadership was serious in carrying out internal improvements. However, according to him, major challenges remain, for example, a bribery case involving three judges at the Surabaya District Court, namely Erintuah Damanik, Heru Hanindyo, and Mangapul, who allegedly received bribes of Rp 3.6 billion.

This case further tarnished the image of the judiciary after it was revealed that they were working with Zarof Ricar, a former MA official who had assets worth IDR 920.9 billion and 51 kilograms of gold.

"We are all concerned about this case, but I believe the Supreme Court is able to make this an important lesson to be more assertive and transparent in fixing the judiciary," said Rano.

As a legislator, Rano emphasized his support for reform measures initiated by the Supreme Court. He believes that the Chairman of the Supreme Court Sunarto has the capacity and integrity to bring significant changes.

"The chairman of the Supreme Court has shown a clear direction to eradicate rogue judges and mafia cases. This is a good start. I believe, under his leadership, reforms will continue, and our judicial image will recover," said the Banten electoral district legislator.

Rano also ensured that Commission III of the DPR RI was ready to support the Supreme Court in carrying out stricter supervision and eradicating corrupt practices within the judiciary.

"We in Commission III will continue to oversee and support the Supreme Court to create a clean, professional, and integrity justice. Community trust is our common responsibility," he concluded.
