Meeting The British Parliament, Fadli Zon Leads The BKSAP DPR Galang Support For Palestine

JAKARTA - Chairman of the House of Representatives' Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Agency (BKSAP), Fadli Zon met with British lawmaker Jeremy Corbyn to garner support for Palestine. In addition, BKSAP also wants to encourage parliamentary friendly countries to support global peace initiatives in the midst of heating up geopolitical issues and large power inequality.

The meeting of Fadli Zon and Jeremy Corbyn was held at the Portcullis House building, the British Parliament Complex on Wednesday (22/11). Jeremy Corbyn is a former chairman of the Labor Party (Labour Party) and the leader of the British Opposition for the 2015-2020 period who is known to always voice support for Palestinian independence.

Fadli said the meeting was not only proof of a long-term relationship between Indonesia and Britain, but also as a symbol of cross-border parliamentary support in strengthening international solidarity with the Palestinian people.

To Corbyn, Fadli Zon gave a scarf of House support for Palestine containing the symbols of the Palestinian and Indonesian flags. In fact, he helped Corbyn cast the scarf.

"At that meeting, we agreed that to continue to advocate for the Palestinian cause and stressed the need for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza," said Fadli Zon, Friday, November 24.

He added that the meeting with Corbyn was also part of the DPR's move to garner global support for the Palestinian people. Because, continued Fadli, Jeremy Corbyn is an active figure in the Solidarity Campaign for Palestine (Palestinine Solidarity Campaign) in England and Wales.

"Jeremy Corbyn is known as a strong Palestinian supporter. Not only in England, but also on the global stage. It is important to attract support from the European region, and he has agreed to join as a member of the Parliament League for Palestine," he said.

During the meeting, according to Fadli, Jeremy Corbyn underlined the multidimensional conflicts facing people in the Gaza Strip. Corbyn also stressed the importance of collective action in parliamentary networks to support Palestinians who are still being attacked by the Israeli military.

"We also agreed to take advantage of the role and reach of parliament in fighting for this issue on the international stage," said Fadli.

According to the legislator from the West Java V electoral district, his meeting with Corbyn did not only discuss geopolitical issues. Fadli Zon said the two of them also discussed the need for the state to ensure food security amid the issue of climate change.

Moreover, said Fadli, this issue has always been discussed in every international forum, either through parliamentary forums or government forums.

"We at the same time exchange views regarding strategies to mitigate this challenge through sustainable practice and international cooperation," said the member of the council who also served in Commission I of the DPR.

In the field of the environment, the British parliament and the House of Representatives are said to have a shared commitment to advocate for a green economy and a clean energy transition to environmental sustainability.

"Recognizing the threat of climate change, we are also discussing policies and innovations that can support ecological resilience and economic development," explained Fadli.

Fadli and Corbyn also discussed various issues related to democratic issues. On this occasion, Fadli revealed to Corbyn that Indonesia will hold simultaneous elections in 2024 which will prioritize the integrity of democracy and receive a positive response.

"The importance of transparent election practices and the protection of democratic values is emphasized as the basis for national and international stability," he concluded.
