JAKARTA - The group's demonstration was rushed in front of the DKI Jakarta City Hall, Medan Merdeka Selatan Street was chaotic. This demonstration demanded an increase in the DKI Jakarta provincial minimum wage (UMP) in 2024 by 15 percent.

This action has been held since this afternoon. They are waiting for the Acting Governor of DKI Jakarta Heru Budi Hartono to announce an increase in the UMP next year. However, for hours of waiting, the determination of the UMP has not yet been issued.

At around 15.00 WIB, workers tried to break into the fence of the DKI City Hall which was Heru Budi's workplace. They continued to shake the fence while oding until 15:15 WIB the fence broke.

Police officers who were on guard from the DKI City Hall yard immediately moved forward blocking access from the broken fence. The fence that was successfully occupied by the workers was then taken to the middle of the road, before being finally secured by the authorities.

Before long, the police immediately deployed a water canon car and a mob dispersal car. In front of the workers, the police who wore helmets and shields formed a line trying to push the masses back.

Previously, workers hoped that the Acting Governor of DKI Jakarta Heru Budi Hartono would be willing to determine the amount of the 2024 UMP increase according to their wishes, which is 15 percent to around Rp5.6 million.

"About 15 percent, that's our hope from the workers. Please later, Governor, hopefully we can make a very wise policy decision for the workers," said Chairman of the DKI Jakarta SPSI LEM FSP DPD Yusup Suprapto, always representing workers on the sidelines of demonstrations.

Yusup assessed that the 15 percent increase in the UMP was sufficient limit for workers to meet their daily needs. Remember, this year, the price of basic necessities continues to increase.

"As a note, last year alone he (Heru) dared to determine the increase was 5.6 percent. This means that we hope that he can provide a proper increase as proposed by the trade union, labor union, that the increase is IDR 5.6 million," he explained.

If the wage increase of the workers increases quite high, the workers are confident that they can cover their living expenses. From this, Yusup assessed that there would be quite good economic growth.

"If my wages increase well, meet my living needs for next year, I can spend my money on the interests of my domestic affairs, my family, my children. The wheels of the economy are also alive," said Yusup.
