Ministry Of PUPR Builds 558 Suspension Bridges Throughout 2015-2023

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) built 558 suspension bridges during the 2015-2023 period in order to facilitate connectivity between villages.

"The presence of the suspension bridge will make it easier and shorten the access of rural communities to schools, markets, workplaces, take care of administration to sub-district or sub-district offices and access to gatherings between residents," said PUPR Minister Basuki Hadimuljono as reported by ANTARA, Monday, October 23.

Basuki said the Ministry of PUPR in supporting connectivity between regions not only builds massive-scale infrastructure such as toll roads, but also people's infrastructure such as suspension bridges.

"The suspension bridge is a connecting access between villages that has a vital role to facilitate the mobility of people, services and logistics for the local community," he said.

Cumulatively from 2015 to 2023, the Ministry of PUPR through the Directorate General of Highways has built 473 suspension bridges throughout Indonesia with a total length of 34,932 meters. The suspension bridge was built with a shortest span of 42 meters and the longest is 150 meters with a width of 1.8 meters.

In detail, as many as 10 suspension bridges with a length of 762 meters were built in 2015, 7 suspension bridges with a length of 720 meters in 2016, 13 suspension bridges with a length of 814 meters in 2017, 130 suspension bridges with a length of 9,074 meters in 2018, and 139 suspension bridges with a length of 9,930 meters in 2019.

In 2020 41 suspension bridges with a length of 3,288 meters have been completed, in 2021 as many as 65 suspension bridges with a length of 4,974 meters, and in 2022 as many as 68 suspension bridges with a length of 5,370 meters.

Furthermore, this year it is targeted that 85 suspension bridges will be completed so that the total suspension bridges will be built from 2015 to 2023 to reach 558 units. Meanwhile, for 2024, we are still waiting for the proposed location for the need for a suspension bridge.

Several suspension bridges that have been completed by work include the Girpair Suspension Bridge in Central Java Province, the Kareho Suspension Bridge in West Kalimantan, and the Manembonembo Suspension Bridge - Girian Bawah in North Sulawesi.

The suspension bridge has been used by the community as one of the people's infrastructures that facilitates movement and cut travel time between villages, which previously had to go far because it was separated by geographical conditions, such as slopes, hills, ravines, or rivers.
