YOGYAKARTA Some people may want to know the Profile of Saldi Isra, the Constitutional Justice who was in the public spotlight because of his statement during the Constitutional Court's decision on the terms of the Presidential and Vice Presidential Candidates for the 2024 General Election.

Saldi became one of the judges with different opinions or dissenting opinions related to the 90-91/PUU-XXI/2023 case submitted by a student from Surakarta named Almas Tsaibbirru Re A.

In this case, the Constitutional Court partially granted a lawsuit regarding the age limit for presidential and vice-presidential candidates aged at least 40 years or experienced as regional heads, both at the provincial and district/city levels. This decision allows Gibran Rakabuming Raka to run as a vice presidential candidate in the upcoming elections.

Regarding this decision, Saldi admitted that he was confused about the attitude of the Constitutional Court which could change in a short time.

"Regarding the new meaning of the norm of Article 169 letter q of Law 7/2017, I am confused and really confused about where to start this dissenting opinion," said Saldi Isra in the Court Building courtroom, Monday, October 16.

"Since setting foot as a Constitutional Justice in this Court building on April 11, 2017, or about six and a half years ago, this is the first time I have experienced an 'extraordinary''strange' event and can be said to be far from reasonable reasoning limits: the Court has changed its stance and attitude only in a secular manner," continued Saldi.

Profile Saldi Isra is the Deputy Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court. He was inaugurated by President Joko Widodo on April 11, 2017 as Constitutional Justice replacing Patrialis Akbar.

The Professor of Constitutional Law set aside two other candidates for judges who had been handed over to Jokowi by the selection committee (Pansel) of the Constitutional Court Judge on April 3, 2017.

Adapted from the MKRI page, Saldi was born on August 20, 1968 in Paninggahan, West Sumatra. This man has a unique story from his own name.

At first, Saldi's parents, namely Ismail and Ratina, only gave their birth names as 'Sal'. However, when they were about to register for Elementary School (SD), the head of the school said that his name was too short. The father then added the word '-in' behind his name, and since then his name became Saldi.

When he was in grade 6 elementary school, Saldi added the name 'Isra' as his last name, which stands for the names of his parents.

"So it's not that ISRA I was born at isra miraj night, it's a combination of Is's male and female parents, Ismail and Ra, Ratina. So Ismail Ratina I improvised without permission from my parents, I just made it myself," said Saldi, quoted from the official website of the MKRI, Tuesday, October 17, 2023.

Saldi had never previously imagined that he would study legal knowledge until he became the constitution. When he was in High School (SMA), he majored in physics.

When he graduated from high school, Saldi Isra had the goal of continuing to the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). However, on his way, he decided to move to Jambi to look for work.

Next, Saldi registered at Andalas University and entered the course of Law as his last choice. Unexpectedly, he managed to graduate and received the Summa Cum Laude Predicate with IPK 3.86.

Not only that, but Saldi also graduated as the best and immediately started his career as a lecturer at Bung Hatta University in 1995, before finally moving to Andalas University, Padang.

Saldi has been a lecturer at Andalas University for almost 22 years. In the midst of his busy schedule as a lecturer, Saldi also took the Master of Public Administration program at Malaya University, Malaysia and graduated in 2001.

Then, in 2009, he completed his doctoral education at Gadjah Mada University with the Predicate Cum Laude. Then in 2010, Saldi was confirmed as Professor of Constitutional Law at Andalas University.

Apart from being a lecturer, Saldi is also active as a writer in various mass media and journals both nationally and internationally. He is also known as the Director of the Center for Constitutional Studies (PUSAKO) of the Faculty of Law, Andalas University, which has concerns on constitutional issues.

Saldi's desire to serve as a constitutional judge was realized when he was 48 years old.
