JAKARTA - The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) revealed several reasons why regional languages in the country could be threatened with extinction.

Head of the BRIN Obing Katubi Language and Literature Preservation Research Center (Kapusris) explained a number of underlying factors, including the failure of local language transmission from parents to children, negative attitude towards regional languages, the assumption that regional languages have no economic value, the lack of attention from local governments, and massive language contact due to digital media.

"The language contact is getting more massive because of digital media, making it easier for members of the language community to explore other languages in cyberspace as well as the factor," said Obing, in Jakarta, Sunday, October 8.

In addition, according to him, another reason for regional languages to be threatened with extinction is the dominance and subordination of the use of language, both nationally and regionally.

Obing said that what is meant by the failure of local language transmission from parents to children, namely parents are reluctant to use their regional language in communicating at the family level so that the child who acts as a young speaker cannot inherit the regional language from his parents.

He conveyed, while the negative attitude towards regional languages was that there was a view that regional languages were less prestigious to study than foreign languages.

The assumption that it has no economic value or is less able to provide prosperity from an economic perspective to children in the future, is one of the reasons why the regional language in Indonesia can be threatened with being lost.

He said that if you look at Law Number 24 of 2009 concerning the National Flag, Language and Emblem, as well as the National Anthem, the obligation to revitalize regional languages lies with the local government.

"The law says that regional language protection or revitalization actually exists with the local government," he said.
